Schistosomiasis, a parasitic disease contracted through contact with contaminated water sources, poses a significant health risk to the vulnerable children of Mpape, Abuja. Recognizing this urgent need, the Better Life Program for the African Rural Woman (BLPARW), in collaboration with its partner, GIPLC, implemented a critical intervention: the provision of a solar-powered borehole to the Mpape community.

Prior to this intervention, the community relied heavily on the Mpape River as their primary water source. However, this river is heavily contaminated, posing a significant risk of waterborne diseases such as schistosomiasis. Furthermore, many children in Mpape live in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions with limited access to basic sanitation facilities.

By providing a reliable source of clean water through the solar-powered borehole, BLPARW and GIPLC have taken a significant step towards improving the health and well-being of the community. This intervention has:

  • Reduced the prevalence of schistosomiasis: By providing access to clean and safe water, the risk of contracting schistosomiasis has been significantly reduced.
  • Improved hygiene and sanitation: The availability of clean water has encouraged improved hygiene practices within the community, leading to a healthier living environment for all residents.
  • Enhanced children's health and well-being: Reduced exposure to contaminated water has positively impacted the health and well-being of the children, enabling them to attend school more regularly and focus on their studies.
  • Improved living conditions: The provision of clean water, coupled with the renovation of accommodations, has significantly improved the living conditions of the community members.

This project demonstrates BLPARW's commitment to addressing critical health challenges and improving the living conditions of vulnerable populations. By providing access to clean water and promoting improved sanitation, BLPARW and GIPLC are making a tangible difference in the lives of the Mpape community with your support, we can achieve the Sustainable Development Goals as little steps like this, makes the loudest impact.
