Project Report | Aug 10, 2015
Biomonitoring program across Tai NP Ivory Coast

By Dervla Dowd | WCF-country director

Dear supporter,

Each year, in order to evaluate the impact of law enforcement missions led throughout the park, the Office Ivoirien des Parcs et Reserves (OIPR) supported by WCF, performs a biomonitoring program across the whole of the Taï National Park. By collecting data on the presence of wildlife and anthropogenic threats, we can measure changes in wildlife populations to establish an understanding of the presence and status of different populations of animals.

The funding from Global Giving supports the permanent presence of park rangers in the Tai Natioanl Park who were trained for biomonitoring. We have seen an improvement in the conservation status of the park, with areas of the forest being recolonized by wildlife, where they had previously been empty. Importantly, chimpanzee populations have remained stable, which is a great accomplishment.

Moreover, poaching incidents have reduced in comparison to previous years, particularly in the ecotourism and research areas of the park, which have the permanent presence of eco-guides, field assistants and also park rangers. Nonetheless, some areas are still in need of increased law enforcement and community educations projects to help reduce the hunting activities and other illegal activities such as gold-mining and farming.

It is vital that funds continue to be raised for this project, to ensure the OIPR rangers are enforcing the law in and around the park and thereby protecting the habitat of the West African chimpanzee and other unique and endangered wildlife of West Africa!

Thank you for your support in this project.
