Scaling Giant tree conservation in central India
Distribution map of giant trees in Deori block
After successful launch of Giant tree campaign in Vidarbha region in eastern Maharashtra, local communities started approaching our field team for participation in this program. This certainly shows that recognition brings more value and respect to the custodian of the tree than financial incentive. The certification of appreciation that we have prepared and present to the tree owners has become a matter of pride to them which plays a key role in ensuring social sustainability of this important initiative. In any case, token amount as incentive will be always incorrect measure of true value of the Giant trees. One of the intangible values of the Giant trees is their central role in cultural belief system in forest dwelling communities.
For example, according to one tradition, local people hang earthen pots on the giant trees and keep food and water in these pots. This signifies connection of the local people with lost members of their community. People believe that the these particular trees have the secret power to establish connection with lost members of their family. Our team keeps documenting such interesting stories and practices while conducting the surveys.
In the quarter gone by our field team mapped around 50 trees in Deori block of Gondia district and handed over the certificates of appreciation along with the incentives.
We truly believe that these small steps in building network of giant trees in a landscape devoid of forest cover will certainly help many frugivores to thrive and grow.
Your continued support to this initiative is thus much appreciated.
