66 year old Narashimharao would think many a time before setting off to see a doctor. Living in
a hamlet called Cherukupalle in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, lack of an all-weather road made
travelling outside the village a difficult affair. Also, with his tailoring shop busy at all hours of day, going
to a doctor was often put off until situation turned from bad to worse.
Narashimharao has been suffering from Diabetes since many years. A visit to the doctor long ago had told him
that but lack of proper knowledge meant it worsened over time. A day came when he had to get his left
leg amputated below the knee as a festering wound turned to ate away at his leg.
Soon after, he started experiencing difficulty in seeing at work. Threading needles became a herculean
task and his fingers trembled while working on the sewing machine. Despite his son’s help, their
livelihood suffered. Moving about became difficult. Visit a doctor he might but treatment was out of his
reach.
He got to hear about the outreach camp of Sankara Eye Hospital, Guntur at the nearby Chiluvuru village.
He attended the camp and was diagnosed with cataract in both eyes. His vision in the right eye
especially had deteriorated to such an extent that he was just about able to perceive light. 2 days later a
smile was playing on his lips as he saw with clarity after a long a long time after the dressing was
changed.
He has been advised to go for the second eye surgery as soon as possible. Even as he returns soon with
improved vision in the right eye he is able to go to work and comfortably sew dresses.
In his own words he expresses that “The services rendered by Sankara Eye Hospital are very much
helpful to the poor and neglected parents. I wish that these services are continued in the same manner”.
