The sacrifices parents make for children are astounding, and Senrayan’s sacrifice is no less amazing. 40 year old Senrayan, living in Vaniambadi, Tamil Nadu, works on a farm as a coolie. He is a father of two lovely young children, a girl (1 ½ yrs) and a boy (4 yrs). His life would seem normal to any outsider, however it is not. Senrayan completely lost sight in his Right eye, yet continued to work hard under grueling circumstances to provide support for his children. He put off any surgery because of the time it would take, and because of the cost. All that Senrayan heard about was the cost that he could barely afford and that would detract considerably from his children’s comfort. Placing his children before his own health, Senrayan did not get his eye treated.
For about an year, Senrayan lived his life half blind, for his children’s sake. But then, he learned about Sankara Eye Hospital, Coimbatore conducting Free Eye camps every month. Senrayan considered his options, he could continue to support his children like this; with half his vision, or he could take a few days off from work so that he can see his children perfectly again.
Senrayan attended the next Eye camp that Sankara Eye Hospital, Coimbatore conducted in his nearby village. He was checked by the doctors and was diagnosed to have Cataract. Immediately, he was brought to the base hospital at Coimbatore. On July 31st, 2013, surgery was performed and Senrayan’s sight was completely and successfully returned back to him, thanks to the wonderful skill and kindness of the Doctors and Staff at Sankara.
Now with full vision, and a boosted morale Senrayan can return to his work and work harder than ever, enjoy the smiles and laughs of his children, and the beauty of India at its fullest. His satisfaction with Sankara is beyond limits, and he is forever grateful for the high quality care and treatment he has received during his stay at the hospital. When he returns, Senrayan is sure to spread the word about mission of Sankara and help more people see the world around them completely again.
People like Senrayan, who live humble lives leaving little traces of their existence, and working so very hard, rarely are ever rewarded or assisted in any way. However, Sankara is changing this by opening eyes all over India, helping these people who desperately need it but are unable to ask.
As he gave his heartwarming thanks to all at Sankara, Senrayan said “Sankara has helped me when everything seemed bleak, I am forever grateful to this hospital, and shall always remember this wonderful gift given to me whenever I look into the faces of my children.”
