During this reporting period, MHO advanced implementation of the project “Safeguarding of Ethiopia’s Endemic Walia Ibex”, an initiative aimed at strengthening wildlife protection efforts in one of Ethiopia’s most important biodiversity areas. As always, the progress achieved by MHO is made possible only through the compassionate support of GlobalGiving, our individual donors, and corporate partners who share our vision of shared humanity and environmental stewardship. Your continued trust enables us to protect both natural heritage and the communities that depend on it.
Under this project phase, key activities focused on equipping and strengthening the capacity of one park ranger officer responsible for safeguarding the Walia ibex population and its fragile habitat. The officer was provided with essential field equipment, including uniforms and durable shoes, improving mobility, safety, and effectiveness during long patrols in rugged terrain. In addition, basic orientation support was reinforced to enhance field readiness, reporting discipline, and wildlife protection procedures. These improvements are small in scale but critical in strengthening day-to-day conservation enforcement.
A park ranger involved in this effort shared how limited field gear had previously made extended patrols in steep and remote areas extremely challenging, often restricting coverage of key wildlife corridors. With improved equipment, the ranger now reports increased ability to conduct regular monitoring and respond more effectively to potential threats such as illegal grazing and poaching risks. This strengthened presence directly contributes to protecting the Walia ibex, a species found only in Ethiopia and considered highly vulnerable.
Moving forward, MHO remains committed to reinforcing conservation capacity through practical, targeted support that enhances the effectiveness of frontline rangers. We sincerely appreciate your partnership, which continues to translate into tangible protection for Ethiopia’s unique wildlife and long-term ecological resilience
