Dear friends and supporters,
I wanted to update you on several events we’ve organized this year to engage the community and raise awareness about environmental challenges in Honduras. In May, we worked with our partner the Association of Water Councils of the Southern Sector of Pico Bonito (AJAASSPIB) to coordinate environmental education with primary schools in the Municipality. Students marched with their posters, exhorting us all to “Conserve and Protect our Environment.”
More recently, on September 9, we helped organize a tree-planting campaign! Your support makes it possible. EcoLogic, AJAASSPIB, our local community partners, local universities, and other stakeholders of the Municipality of Olanchito came together to plant 15,000 trees, including oak, cedar, saman or “rain tree”, and guanacaste or “elephant ear” trees. The goal was to raise awareness of the community at large, about the importance of the watersheds and keeping them healthy.
About 60 people participated, including children, students, and community members at large. It was a huge success that drew attention to the environmental challenges caused by deforestation and forest loss--and how they relate to the health of watersheds and communities’ water supply.
Thank you so very much for being an essential part of these efforts! I look forward to keeping you updated on our progress.
Muchas gracias, amigos!
Carlos
