"After my appa's(father's) death, I was left with nothing except my family and a small room with no proper roofing to stay with. My amma(mother) Dhanalakshmi started working as a coolie to feed all the four of us. My sister Sathya, my brother Venkatesh and me had to study with the meagre coolie my mother brought. It was very difficult," says Kumar with his eyes filled with sadness.
The special school staff who brought Kumar to our home describes Kumar's background. Kumar's father was running a flour mill. Though he is not rich, he can feed his family and can take care of the basic needs of the children. But after his death, Kumar's paternal relatives took away the mill, the only livelihood option of the family. So Dhanalakshmi who studied only second standard was forced to go to coolie work. Since she could not take care of the educational needs of the three children, she started searching avenues for continuing her children's education. It was then she met Veerappan, our special school teacher.
Kumar and his sister Sathya were admitted to our Poonjolai home with the reference of the special school staff of New Life. After they are admitted in Poonjolai, Sathya and Kumar are getting enough food, dresses for change, and good education. Kumar wants to become a software engineer. He studies well. He is good in English. He scores 78% average marks in his exams. He is now studying in 6th standard.
When he was admitted, he was a very puny, malnourished child. But now he has gained normal weight and has grown up. It is all possible with the support you, our dear donors, have been providing us and these children. Kumar and our other children thank you so much for your kind support.
