Have you ever woken up only to find that your babysitter is no longer caring for your baby and you have to work or your baby will starve?
Unemployed and unsupported single mothers here in the Kiberia slums of Nairobi used to have no choice but to risk leaving their babies at home unattended . This put the lives and wellbeing of these children at grave risk. Without support of family or friends, young mums were forced to leave their babies alone, unprotected and unnurtured while they sought day labour. In the case of fire outbreak or community clashes, these babies were helpless. They could be vulnerable to harsh weather conditions, to child abuse and even to trafficking. Because of horrifying situations like these, Tiba Africa Foundation set up Joy Baby Care, where single mothers are able to bring their babies while they seek day labour. They know they will be safe while they work.
Since the introduction of Joy Baby Care, we have seen a drop in dependence ratio in our community. Single mothers are able to provide for their families. They are more at peace when looking for work or working. Cases of abandoned children are hardly reported now. Sickness among children especially as a result of malnutrition or poor care have also been reduced. It is our dream that one day Joy Baby Care will grow big enough to accommodate more of the babies in our community.
