SOLVE IT RIGHT: MENTORING BOYS WITH MATHEMATICS

At the Boys Mentoring Advocacy Network (BMAN), we recognize that young boys are not liabilities to be managed, but vital community assets waiting to be cultivated. Through The SOLVE-IT-RIGHT (SIR) Project, we target boys aged 14–18 during their most critical formative years.

Our mission is to provide a free weekly math program that does not simply teach numbers, but uses the logical, structured framework of mathematics to build critical thinking, self-reliance, and community leadership.

This past quarter coincided with a highly intense period for our participants: the end-of-year school promotional exams and state standardized testing cycles. To ensure our boys could focus completely on their academic advancement without competing priorities, we implemented a planned pause in our program enrollment. This report outlines our strategic rationale, the impact of the program, and our active preparations to launch our next enrollment cycle in the upcoming quarter.

The Core Philosophy: Math as a Blueprint for Logic

Why math? For young men navigating the complex social pressures of adolescence, decision-making can often be driven by impulse rather than logic. Mathematics acts as a structural antidote to this.

Through the SIR Project, we teach our boys that life, much like algebra, is full of variables that can be navigated systematically:

Interactive Problem-Solving: By engaging in collaborative math challenges, the boys learn that complex problems are solved by breaking them down into smaller, logical steps. This directly builds their Adversity Quotient (AQ).

Critical Thinking over Impulse: We train participants to analyze situations, weigh variables, and predict outcomes, helping them make constructive choices in their personal lives and peer interactions.

Community Development: We challenge our participants to use their analytical skills to identify challenges in their local neighborhoods and work together to design logical, math-supported solutions.

Quarterly Status: Supporting Our Boys Through the Exam Cycle

During the second quarter of 2026, the SIR Project temporarily paused new participant enrollment and weekly sessions.

This was a planned, strategic decision designed to protect our students' formal academic standing. The months of May and June represent the peak of the secondary school examination cycle in Nigeria. Our boys were fully occupied preparing for and sitting their promotional, terminal, and national examinations (including WAEC and NECO).

The Rationale Behind the Recess:

Academic Prioritization: We believe our mentorship must support, not distract from, formal school systems. Forcing weekly extracurricular sessions during terminal exams would have diluted the boys' focus.

Mental and Emotional Space: Exam seasons are highly stressful. By stepping back, we gave our boys the mental breathing room to perform at their highest cognitive capacity.

Tracking Progress: We are currently compiling the school academic results of our previous cohorts to measure how their participation in the SIR math program impacted their formal term-end performance.

The Strategy Forward: Preparing for the New Quarter

While classrooms were empty, our project team was actively preparing behind the scenes. We are currently laying the groundwork for an explosive relaunch in the upcoming quarter:

Curriculum Refinement: We are updating our interactive problem-solving modules, introducing more gamified math challenges that appeal to the digital realities of 21st-century teenagers.

Tutor & Mentor Alignment: We are recruiting and preparing volunteer math facilitators, matching their professional expertise with BMAN’s youth mentorship frameworks.

Venue Coordination: We are securing neighborhood community spaces and school classrooms to host our weekly sessions once the new academic term resumes.
