Challenge

The Rwenzori Green Guides Briquettes for Conservation project aims to address several interconnected problems such as deforestation and environmental degradation especially the use of wood and charcoal fuels by tourists, tourist escorts and staff in Rwenzori Mountains National Park which contributes to deforestation and environmental degradation, waste pollution especially the local agro-waste bio products that are often left unused, causing waste pollution in and around the Park.

Solution

The Rwenzori Green Guides Briquettes for Conservation project will solve the problem by promoting the use of of biomass briquettes as a cleaner fuel substitute, the project will reduce the reliance on wood and charcoal, thereby decreasing the rate of deforestation and environmental degradation in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. The project will utilize local agro-waste bio-products to produce biomass briquettes, reducing waste pollution and adding value to previously unused materials.

Long-Term Impact

Promoting Sustainable Energy Practices accruing from training tourist guides and cooks in biomass briquettes production and use, the project encourages sustainable energy practices, reducing reliance on wood and charcoal. Reducing the Park's Carbon Footprint, by decreasing the use of wood and charcoal fuels, the project contributes to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing the park's carbon footprint and supporting conservation efforts.
