Summary

Several Xhosa mamas from the local community at Hole in the Wall, in the rural Eastern Cape, South Africa have approached Ncinci One's Montessori preschool, asking us to please help their children in grades 1, 2 and 3 to read, write and do numbers. This clearly indicates the need for a stimulating After-School Program and has inspired us to take action. We are ready and excited to launch the Siyafunda After-School Enrichment Program, promoting literacy, numeracy and sport for 60 rural children.

Challenge

84% of Grade 4 children in the Eastern Cape, South Africa cannot read to understand - PIRLS 2016. Our program will provide an educational opportunity for these rural children to build solid literacy and numeracy skills, while they are still in their early foundation years. These skills are essential for any further learning to take place, and reading ultimately leads to having a more dignified, empowered and independent life. Currently only 32% of children in our area complete their high school

Solution

The Siyafunda Program will provide rural Xhosa children in grades 1, 2 and 3 with a stimulating After-School and holiday Program. Literacy development will be done using stories, discussions and creative activities. Numeracy development will be done using the Maths Buddy Program. Sport will include hockey and handball. These activities will empower these rural children to build their educational foundations, which will support all their later learning and ensure educational and personal success.

Long-Term Impact

The children that attend the program will build educational foundations that are necessary for all later learning. They will become fully literate in their mother tongue and reading for pleasure will be introduced to the children - this is a gift for life. The program will strengthen these children's literacy and numeracy skills, giving them the necessary foundation and confidence for future educational success. These children will also ultimately take home the skills they learn and share them.
