After a busy registration period, class is back in session at our Believe in Me schools in western Cambodia. Everyone is busily working to review the material taught and learned during the last school year. In addition to a thorough review, the first month of every year our teachers also focus on daily living, hygiene skills, and community-based learning. Even our youngest students are taught about caring for their bodies, how hygiene can keep them healthy, how sugar effects their teeth and bodies, and about keeping their environment around the school and at home clean.
In addition to the core subjects, our schools present opportunities to study art and culture. One of our talented young Believe in Me teachers finds fulfillment while in the classroom and in teaching her students the art of traditional dance. While contemporary music is as popular in Cambodia as it is around the world, our teachers have always placed tremendous importance on helping students learn about their culture and history through music.
Because our schools present full day learning five days a week, we are able to provide students with all the government required curriculum and enrichment classes that offer opportunities for creating lifelong passions and varied experiences. Sharing a book with a friend, learning new instruments and notes to play, and trying out multiple ways to be creative on paper offers respite from what could otherwise be long days of studying. In the coming school year, we hope to increase our students' opportunities to develop new skills by employing a full-time computer teacher to help them learn how to properly use technology. A recent addition of wireless internet will also allow our teachers to increase the use of technology inside our classrooms
In order to ensure that our students are receiving the nutrition they need to grow and learn, we continue to provide daily hot and nutritious meals, as well supplemental rice and fresh food deliveries to our poorest students and their families who live and work in nearby landfills. We are so grateful to our donors who make this possible!
