Compounding Crises in Bangladesh

By Ehab Elsawaf | Deputy Director of Development

Thank you for your support of this proejct, I'm writing to share an update on ActionAid's work in Bangladesh, and specifically, Cox's Bazar.

Earlier this year, Bangladesh faced a compounding humanitarian crisis as widespread flooding, flash floods and landslides affect communities across the country, including Cox’s Bazar, where vulnerable refugee and host communities are already living under significant humanitarian pressure. More than 1.07 million people have been affected, with 267,918 households displaced and 54 deaths reported at the time of impact. In Cox’s Bazar, flooding has disrupted livelihoods, damaged infrastructure and roads, contaminated water and sanitation facilities, and increased protection and public health risks. For refugee and host communities in and around the camps, these impacts further compound existing vulnerabilities and make access to essential services, safe shelter and livelihoods more difficult.

ActionAid Bangladesh has been responding through its established presence in Pekua, Cox’s Bazar, and Teknaf, working through local partners and youth networks to reach affected communities.

ActionAid has provided emergency cash, shelter materials, food and dignity kits, reaching 9,500 people across Pekua and Teknaf, while supporting the repair of 108 damaged shelters. The response has been informed by a gender analysis highlighting heightened protection risks, livelihood losses, food insecurity and barriers for women accessing evacuation shelters, reinforcing the need for gender-responsive shelter, GBV risk mitigation, cash and livelihood recovery, safe water and sanitation, and psychosocial support.

Our work is far from over, but your generosity has helped to make a tremendous impact over the years. Please continue supporting ActionAid's efforts in Bangaldesh and be sure to share this project with anyone who you think might be interested to learn more.

Thank you.
