Life and Resilience in the Rohingya Camps

By Suhailah Waheed | Interim Development Support

We are thankful for your support of this project. I am writing to share some updates from ActionAid's emergency response for Rohingya refugees and am featuring a special story from Sokina, who lives in one of ActionAid's community centers in Cox's Bazar refugee camp in Bangladesh.

In 2017, Sokina fled her village in Myanmar after the military stormed through, finding refuge across the border. Life in the camp is difficult, and the memories of her former home and village often bring Sokina deep sorrow. But despite the challenges, she’s channeled her strength into meaningful work, creating safety and support in her community.

As a volunteer with ActionAid Bangladesh’s site management team, Sokina spends her days visiting families, educating them about natural disasters like cyclones, monsoons, fires, and waterborne diseases. She participates in fire drills and responds to real fires as part of a mobile firefighting unit.

“I may not be in my own village,” she shares, “but here, I have a purpose, and I belong.”

For Sokina, like the nearly 1 million Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, hope and resilience are a part of everyday life. ActionAid Bangladesh, working alongside the Bangladesh government and other humanitarian organizations, remains committed to supporting the Rohingya community. From ensuring protection and basic needs to advocating for safe repatriation, our efforts are grounded in the belief that everyone deserves a place to call home.

As Sokina walks back to her shelter each evening, there’s a glimmer of hope in her eyes. Her dedication to her community and her dream of returning to her village reflect the strength and courage of the Rohingya people.

Let’s stand together to support this resilient community. Join us in creating a future where refugees are not only welcomed but empowered.
