Building Digital Skills and Expanding Opportunities

Dear friends,

Greetings from educate.!

Over the past few months, our STEM programme has continued to break down barriers and, little by little, close the digital divide for young people across our rural communities. It is an honour to share some of the latest stories and impact made possible through your support.

We believe that access to technology and digital education opens the door to new opportunities for learning, creativity, and future careers. Through our hands-on STEM programme, Technology with Purpose, we continue to create spaces where children and young people can develop the digital skills and confidence that are essential for their futures.

Primary school STEM courses

In our Level 1 programme, girls and boys from public primary schools in the municipality of Trinidad attend STEM sessions at our Youth Center every Thursday and Friday. For many, this is their very first experience using a computer. These first interactions with technology are powerful moments that begin to bridge the digital divide that continues to affect rural communities.

One recent highlight has been learning to use Microsoft Excel. Students have learned to identify rows and columns, use basic formulas, and create tables and charts to organise and visualise data. While these may seem like simple skills, they allow for building hands-on IT skills and provide an important foundation for future learning and growth.

These courses are led by youth facilitators from our high school and university scholarship programmes. One of these facilitators is Andrea, who is currently studying for a bachelor's degree in psychology.

"Being a STEM coordinator has been a very enriching and meaningful experience for me," she shares. "I enjoy guiding the children through their first steps in learning about technology, watching them develop new skills, awaken their curiosity, and gain self-confidence. Every class brings a new challenge and also an opportunity for me to learn alongside them."

As children develop digital skills, young leaders like Andrea are also growing as educators, mentors, and future professionals, creating a cycle of learning and leadership within their own communities.

Digital Design with Tinkercad

In our secondary school programme, students have been exploring digital design using the Tinkercad platform. This has been an exciting new experience, introducing them to the world of 3D design as they learned to build model cars by combining different shapes and design tools.

These sessions were led by María, a volunteer facilitator from the United Kingdom, and introduced students to a creative new application of technology. Along the way, they strengthened their creativity, problem-solving abilities, and independent thinking, while discovering how digital tools can be used to turn ideas into reality.

Thanks to your support, children and young people continue to develop the technological skills, confidence, and curiosity they need to pursue new educational and professional opportunities. Every workshop, every lesson, and every first experience with technology is an investment in a generation that is better equipped to shape its own future and contribute to the development of its communities.
