Motorcycle transport is widely used in Abuja, yet many riders lack safety training and protective gear. Road crashes involving motorcycle riders remain a public health concern. This project will organize a road safety program for 50 okada riders in Abuja during UN Global Road Safety Week. Riders will receive safety training, reflective vests, and safety kits to help reduce road accidents and promote safer riding practices.
Road traffic crashes are a major cause of injury and death worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, more than one million people die each year due to road traffic injuries. Motorcycle riders are among the most vulnerable road users. In Nigeria many okada riders operate without formal safety training or protective gear.
The project will organize a road safety training program for okada riders in Abuja. Participants will learn safe riding practices, road traffic rules, and ways to reduce crash risks. Each rider will receive reflective vests and safety kits to increase visibility on the road and promote safer riding habits.
Training riders and providing safety gear can reduce motorcycle related crashes and injuries. Safer riding practices can also protect passengers and other road users. As trained riders apply safe road habits, communities can experience fewer road accidents and improved road safety awareness.
