On May 24th, the 2011 Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation Summer Camp season kicked off! We welcomed 83 campers from Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and Missouri. As the 83 campers arrived, they filled their brand new book bags with equipment and uniforms to use for the week. (picture)
In addition to learning the fundamentals of baseball and softball each day, campers found themselves trying new things and overcoming their fears:
-“I tried to climb to the top of the rock wall. The reason it’s special is because I planned to go to the middle, but I pushed myself to go to the top.” Isak
-“Rock climbing was special because it made me push myself hard and try something new.” – Jalia
-“When we went to the obstacle course, I was scared to play on the big swing and it was special because all of my friends were cheering me on when I felt like I couldn’t do it and eventually I did it.” – Pareece
-“I gave up a position I wanted to a kid who also wanted it. I had to try a new position, and it felt great what I did.” – Marcelino
The campers were also asked to set some goals each day like those listed below:
-“A thing I could do for tomorrow is uplift everybody and cheer. I am also going to try to hit a homer.” – Shianne B.
-“Push myself like I did today.” – Isak
On Thursday, May 26th, the Maryland State Police stopped by to introduce the campers to two patrol dogs, a drug sniffing dog, and a hound dog who showed off his powerful nose. Maryland State Police officers and Deputy U.S. Marshals also volunteered as coaches throughout the entire week of camp. Two police officers participating in Badges for Baseball in Greensboro, North Carolina, also came up to coach even though their kids will not be coming to camp until June. (picture)

There will be four more camps this summer, with the next one starting June 13th. Thank you very much for your support and for giving our kids a once in a lifetime experience!
