NYC, as the international diplomatic hub, will host the first-ever international meeting to address victim assistance and environmental remediation in 2026. We must provide spaces for survivors to share their stories and engage with New York City youth on the existential threat of nuclear weapons. This will be the first time for many young survivors, especially from Kiribati, to express themselves and share the harrowing stories of their families' experience. We provide nucelear justice.
Remote nuclear tests by the US, France, the UK, and the Soviet Union concealed fallout that devastated ecosystems, disrupted Indigenous ways of life, and caused widespread health crises-ecological, cultural, and medical harms that policymakers in the New York area and civil society must confront. Survivors and descendants, some now in New York, press for answers as many endure cancers and PTSD, their voices still silenced despite governments' refusal to acknowledge responsibility.
Ayanna Pressley once said "Those closest to the pain must be closest to the power." We will foster youth activists at the United Nations to highlight their views on nuclear justice and disarmament. Amplifying their voices in UN meetings, briefings, and side events ensures policymakers, diplomatic missions, and international media hear how nuclear testing has affected communities. Engaging youth helps shape accountable policies, keep survivor narratives central, and strengthen global solidarity.
As a long-term impact, we will collaborate with affected communities in Kiribati to build a nuclear justice center. This center will serve as a focal point for the affected communities to meet and discuss developments linked to the creation of an international trust fund for victims. In addition, we will establish a youth network, where young students can learn and engage with survivors and present policy proposals to both diplomats and local politicians to change nuclear policies.
