Dear Friends,

During the 2nd Meeting of States Parties to the TPNW (2MSP), we hosted an incredible amount of side events and helped bring youth activists from Canada, Kiribati, Malaysia, New Mexico, and the Solomon Islands to New York.

We would like to thank The Prospect Hill Foundation, Ploughshares Fund, RSF Social Finance, Marshallese Educational Initiative, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, and Thailand, as well as all of you for ensuring that our youth program was successful and meaningful.

On the First Day of the 2MSP (November 29), we convened the international youth orientation at the Mission of Ireland.

H.E. Ambassador Mythen of Ireland delivered the keynote address. Additional speakers included: Veronique of the ICRC; Hyun-Kim of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs; Benetick, the Executive Director of the Marshallese Educational Initiative; and Keita, a youth representative of ICRC Japan. We were proud to host this training and orientation in collaboration with Ireland for the second time, following our first successful orientation program at the First Meeting of States Parties the year prior. We would like to thank the Marshallese Educational Initiative and The Prospect Hill Foundation for co-sponsoring this year’s orientation.

In addition, on November 29, Kiribati, Kazakhstan, the Prefecture of Hiroshima, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, Reverse The Trend: Save Our People, Save Our Planet, the Marshallese Educational Initiative, and Rotarian Action Group for Peace hosted an important side event on the humanitarian provisions contained in Articles 6 and 7 of the TPNW.

High-level representatives from both Kiribati and Kazakhstan, plus the Governor of Hiroshima; Bonnie, Director of the Armed Conflict and Civilian Protection Initiative, Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School’s International Human Rights Clinic; Benetick, Executive Director, Marshallese Educational Initiative; Dr. Hughes, Member of the Scientific Advisory Group to the TPNW and President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation; and Veronique, Senior Arms Adviser, ICRC Delegation to the UN all contributed valuable and nuanced perspectives to our discourse on Articles 6 and 7.

On Tuesday, November 28, the Mission of Thailand, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and its youth initiative, Reverse The Trend, hosted a side event on ASEAN Perspectives on the TPNW. Speakers included: Vowpailin, Counsellor, Peace, Security, and Disarmament Division, Department of International Organizations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand; Shivanand, Second Secretary, Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations, Dr. Muhadi, Lecturer at the Institute of International Studies of the Universitas Gadjah Mada; Muhammad, a Youth Coordinator for Reverse the Trend, Southeast Asia Chapter; and Rungrot, a Youth Coordinator for Reverse the Trend, Southeast Asia Chapter. Each speaker shared their perspectives on the TPNW.  Ibraheem, a Youth Activist for NAPF and RTT, moderated the event.

On Thursday, November 30, the Mission of Kiribati, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, Reverse The Trend: Save Our People, Save Our Planet, the Marshallese Educational Initiative and The Prospect Hill Foundation convened a significant event entitled From Hiroshima to the Pacific. Speakers included: Keita, ICRC Japan Youth Delegate; Asuka, RTT Activist; Becky, Lecturer of Peace and International Development, University of Bradford; Tinabora, Youth Delegate from Kiritimati; Benetick, Executive Director, Marshallese Educational Initiative; and Maverick, Youth Coordinator, Reverse The Trend Pacific. H.E. Ambassador Tito of Kiribati chaired the panel. Christian, the Policy and Advocacy Coordinator of NAPF and RTT Project Coordinator; and Stella, NAPF Intern and RTT Youth Campaigner, co-moderated the event

Furthermore, we co-hosted a unique art exhibit entitled Hope for a Better Tomorrow and the Nuclear Free Future Awards at the Blue Gallery with our partners and friends. The art exhibit featured paintings by youth from Kiribati, the Solomon Islands, Marshall Islands and Canada. The room was filled to capacity. Following the art exhibit, we co-sponsored the award show. We are very proud that our colleague and adviser, Benetick, Executive Director of the Marshallese Educational Initiative, received the 2023 Nuclear Free Future Award.

In addition to our side events, several members of our youth delegation delivered statements inside the main room. Stella,  a NAPF Intern and RTT Youth Campaigner, Brock a member of our youth delegation, and Omewa, a youth delegate from Kiritimati, Kiribati delivered statements.

Thank you for making all of this possible with your generous contributions.

To help us continue our work, please support us, and have a very happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Christian Ciobanu, RTT Project Coordinator
