SUMMARY

In Kibuku District, many girl children face challenges including poverty, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, limited access to quality education, and gender-based violence. Household responsibilities often affect school attendance and performance. Despite efforts by government and community organizations to promote girls’ rights, barriers to education, health, and empowerment remain significant.

KADO continues to acknowledge and appreciate all partners and donors who have made remarkable contributions toward supporting the retention of orphaned girl children in schools in Uganda. This report covers project activities implemented during February 2026–May 2026.

During this period, the project supported caretakers of orphaned girls with agricultural inputs, distributed scholastic materials and reusable sanitary pads to in-school adolescent orphaned girls, and conducted school monitoring visits. The project team monitored learners in schools to confirm the number that completed Term I of 2026 academic year and those continuing with term two.

Achievements

  • 18 schools were visited to confirm learners’ attendance and situation.
  • 56 orphaned children were visited and engaged.
  • 2 orphaned girl children had dropped out of school; follow-up efforts are ongoing to support their return.
  • 22 caretakers of orphaned girls received maize seeds for planting.

Challenges

  • Limited funding and support to sustain the high number of orphaned girls in school.
  • Difficulty in meeting school requirements for orphaned girl children.
  • Increasing number of child mothers in schools with limited support available to them.

Recommendations

KADO therefore requests continued support from all stakeholders to enhance girls’ education in Uganda. Access to education for vulnerable girls remains low, and early pregnancies, child marriages, and school dropouts are still prevalent among them. Strengthened collaboration and increased funding are essential to address these challenges effectively.
