Quarterly Progress Report - 25 October 2026

With the continued support of GlobalGiving and its donors, Communities EverGreening Africa (CEGA) is advancing the Riparian Restoration and Sustainable Livelihoods Project by strengthening community participation in nature-based enterprises. During the repoting period, the project focused on expanding opportunities for women through beekeeping, combining shared investment in equipment with practical training to build local capacity and ownership.

The initiative reflects CEGA’s commitment to ensuring that environmental conservation goes hand in hand with improved livelihoods. By supporting women to establish and manage their own apiaries, the project seeks to create opportunities for additional household income while promoting pollination, biodiversity, and the sustainable use of natural resources

1. Community Mobilization

CEGA continued promoting nature-based livelihood opportunities through community engagement and support for women’s participation in beekeeping.

Working with a local women’s group, CEGA facilitated a collaborative approach to investing in the initiative, bringing together contributions from the group and the organization. This resulted in 16 women receiving 22 beehives, providing the foundation for the development of a community-led beekeeping enterprise.

The shared contribution reflects a commitment to collective responsibility and local ownership. It also demonstrates CEGA’s approach of combining community participation with organizational support to establish livelihood activities that can be sustained beyond the initial investment.

2. Technical Training and Beekeeping Capacity Development

CEGA complemented the provision of beehives with practical training to help the women develop the knowledge and skills required to establish and manage their apiaries.

The training covered three main areas:

  • Hive construction and local artisan engagement: Introducing the women to hive construction and the role of local artisans in producing suitable beekeeping equipment, while supporting local skills and participation.
  • Colony establishment and apiary management: Providing practical guidance on establishing bee colonies and managing hives to support colony health and future honey production.
  • Honey harvesting and quality: The hives are fitted with queen excluders, which help prevent the queen from entering the honey storage area. This supports the separation of brood from harvestable honey and facilitates cleaner harvesting practices.

By linking equipment provision with practical skills development, CEGA is helping the women build the technical capacity needed to manage their hives and progressively develop their beekeeping enterprise.

3. Expected Livelihood and Environmental Benefits

The 22 beehives provide a foundation for an enterprise with the potential to diversify household income and strengthen the women’s economic opportunities. As colonies become established and production develops, the group will be better positioned to explore honey marketing and other income-generating opportunities.

Beekeeping also offers environmental benefits through the pollination of crops, fruit trees, and wild plants. These ecological functions can support agricultural productivity and biodiversity, complementing CEGA’s broader efforts to promote sustainable livelihoods alongside environmental restoration.

The scale of these benefits will depend on colony establishment, forage availability, seasonal conditions, and effective apiary management. Honey production and income will therefore need to be monitored as the initiative progresses.

4. Follow-Up Support and Next Steps

CEGA will continue providing technical guidance to support the women as they establish and manage their apiaries. Planned follow-up activities will focus on:

  1. Colony establishment and monitoring: Tracking hive occupancy, colony development, and general hive health.
  2. Honey harvesting and quality management: Strengthening practical skills in harvesting, handling, processing, and storing honey.
  3. Market development: Exploring opportunities for local market access and value addition to improve the enterprise’s commercial viability.

These activities will help identify emerging challenges, inform technical support, and assess progress towards a viable women-led enterprise.

5. Conclusion

The establishment of this women’s beekeeping initiative illustrates CEGA’s approach to linking community mobilization, shared investment, and practical capacity development. By facilitating the provision of 22 beehives to 16 women and complementing this support with technical training, CEGA has helped lay the groundwork for a community-led livelihood enterprise.

The focus in the coming months will be to support successful colony establishment, strengthen the women’s beekeeping skills, and develop opportunities for sustainable income. Over time, the initiative has the potential to contribute to women’s economic empowerment while supporting pollination, biodiversity, and more resilient agricultural landscapes.
