Quarterly Report - 29 October 2025

By Shadrack Mutembei | Project Leader

During this quarter, Communities EverGreening Africa, with generous support from GlobalGiving, made steady progress toward restoring degraded riverbanks in Kenya through the planting of 2,000 indigenous and fruit trees and empowering 80 farming families through beekeeping, agroforestry, and climate-smart farming to strengthen their livelihoods.

We made significant progress with our beekeeping initiative, which now includes 10 active bee farmers managing a total of 87 hives, most of which are currently active and well-colonized through our support. Through practical training and farm visits, farmers enhanced their knowledge of hive management, colony establishment, and maintenance, leading to stronger bee colonies and improved honey production potential.

During training and field visits, farmers identified black ants as their biggest obstacle to productive beekeeping. In response, our team introduced simple, eco-friendly control measures such as greasing hive stands, clearing vegetation around apiaries, and setting up ant barriers. These practices have significantly reduced infestations and improved hive stability.

Encouragingly, a few farmers have already harvested and sold honey, demonstrating the potential of beekeeping as a reliable income source. Their success is motivating other farmers to strengthen hive management and aim for higher yields in the coming season.

As the rainy season approaches, participating farmers are preparing to plant indigenous and fruit trees along riparian zones and farm boundaries. These trees will provide nectar for bees, stabilize soils, and support biodiversity—linking ecological restoration with sustainable livelihoods.

Thanks to your continued support, this initiative is reviving rivers, restoring hope, and regenerating livelihoods—one tree, one family, one river at a time.
