Young Mothers Build Knowledge and Small Incomes
During this quarter, Lidar Community Foundation continued combining practical economic empowerment with reproductive-health education and community participation. Young mothers continued producing and selling fudge, including through the school initiative, to generate small incomes that help them meet everyday needs for themselves and their children.
Activities and Results
• Income generation: The fudge initiative continued, giving participating young mothers a practical way to earn small amounts of income while building confidence in production and selling.
• Reproductive health: Two “Knowing Your Body - Reproductive Health Beyond the Basics” sessions were held on 26 September and 3 October. Attendance registers show 31 participants at each session.
• Health and hygiene: A large number of Lidar members participated in the City of Windhoek Health & Hygiene Promotion Month programme, strengthening awareness of hygiene and handwashing.
• Community participation: Lidar representatives also remained active in constituency and regional coordination structures, including CACOC/CDC planning for the Katutura Central Health Awareness Day and RACOC processes linked to HIV/AIDS coordination and World AIDS Day.
Progress Beyond the Centre
These activities show that the young mothers are engaging beyond the Lidar Centre. They are developing small livelihood opportunities, strengthening their understanding of reproductive health, and taking part in wider community health and development spaces. This combination of knowledge, participation and practical income generation supports greater confidence and independence.
Challenges and Next Steps
Limited resources continue to restrict how quickly the income-generation activities can grow and how many young mothers can be supported consistently. Lidar will continue the fudge initiative, reproductive-health learning and participation in community structures, while seeking additional support to strengthen young mothers’ economic opportunities and wellbeing.
