Season of Love

By Barrett Ellyn Frankel | Development & Communications Manager

The Indatwa Class of 2014
The Indatwa Class of 2014
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"
--Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dear Friends,
We honored a hero in January with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (FUN FACT: did you know there is a family home named after MLK, Jr. in the Village?), and we celebrated those we love in February with Valentine's Day. What better way of tying the two together than to say to each and every one of you that because of the love you have given to the Agahozo-Shalom Family, YOU are our hero. We simply couldn't do it without you!
Your support enables us to pursue our goals of helping some of the most vulnerable kids in Rwanda. Thank you for being our partners, advocates, friends, and supporters.
As we forge ahead toward the Spring months, we ask that you continue to stand with us, celebrate the many accomplishments and successes that we have had, and help us take on the many challenges to achieve our mission, knowing that our work has the power to transform the lives of kids in Rwanda who are most in need. We hope that you'll be able to join us at our 7th-Annual Stand Up & Be Counted benefit on May 4th in NYC. Details are below.
Thank you for being our partners. Together, we can!
Warmest wishes,

Danielle Burenstein, Executive Director

Solar Field & Tony Blair
East Africa's first grid-connected and utility-scale solar field is now online
Agahozo-Shalom was proud to host the ceremonial ribbon-cutting for Gigawatt Global's solar field on Thursday February 5th, and host a very special VIP, in town to tour the field on February 12th - Tony Blair.

The Class of 2018
Agahozo-Shalom's 7th Class Has Moved Into the Village
No one can dispute the fact that Agahozo-Shalom is a beautiful place. However it is not the scenery that really makes ASYV beautiful, but the students that fill the Village with youthful liveliness, ambition, and insurmountable hope. This is why all of the staff was overjoyed when they welcomed the Class of 2018 to their new home in January.

Congratulations Indatwa Grade, Class of 2014
ASYV Hosted its 3rd Graduation Ceremony
On January 8th, the Village celebrated its third graduating class - Indatwa Grade. Indatwa is a Kinyarwanda word that most closely resembles the term role model in English, or "people with a good attitude and high achievements whom you can learn from."

In Memory of Anne
January 31st marked the one-year anniversary of the tragic passing of Agahozo-Shalom's Founder, Anne Heyman. Everyone who was lucky enough to have met her knows what a truly inspiring and passionate woman she was.  The creation of Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village was only made possible through her tireless hard work and dedication to helping others. Reflective of her kindred spirit, the Village decided to commemorate her life through a Village-wide Tikkun Olam volunteer project.
