Cultivating a Brighter Future!

By Barrett Frankel | Development & Communications Manager

At the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village, we have the incredible opportunity to work with some of Rwanda's most inspiring youth - astounding individuals whose rhythm of life is being restored on a daily basis.  In the Village, our students begin dreaming of living extraordinary and fulfilling lives. Our programs help Rwanda's most vulnerable envision a brighter future and provide them with the tools to make that vision a reality.

Children in Africa are among the worst victims of poverty in the world today. Rwanda is home to 2.85 million orphans and vulnerable children. Many of these children lack basic human needs such as food, shelter, access to safe, clean water and medical services, electricity, and often the support of a caring adult. All are necessary for the emotional, physical, and psychological well-being of Rwanda's youth.

Our successes remind us how far we and our kids have come, affirm our efforts, and strengthen our resolve to continue enhancing and evolving the Village.

Before coming to the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village:

  • 95% of our graduates lived in rural villages without water, electricity, and lacked sufficient clothing or food
  • 50% had lost both parents to genocide and were living with relatives, siblings, in an orphanage, or alone
IT TAKES A VILLAGE ...

After 4 years at the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village:
  • 99% passed the most competitive national secondary school exam, compared with 88% nationwide
  • 25% of our graduates received Rwandan Government Merit scholarships
  • 4 graduates have been awarded MasterCard Scholarships and will attend Universities in Canada
  • 6 graduates were chosen for various U.S. College Preparatory Programs
  • 47 graduates completed the One Laptop Per Child intensive training
  • 20 graduates have started their own small business operations
  • Many skills taught at Agahozo-Shalom have been introduced in our graduates' home communities (including the teaching of modern farming techniques, the introduction of arts and dance, as well as computer and English tutoring)
