Update from Relief International: Responding to the Sudan Regional Crisis

By Maryam Sheikh | Resource Development Coordinator

In Sudan, Relief International is continuing to provide life-saving health, nutrition, and sanitation services for individuals and families in urgent need thanks to our dedicated community of supporters.

In 2025 to date, Relief International teams in Sudan have:

  • Provided 689,000 vital services to 323,000 unique individuals
  • Delivered 324,000 health consultations
  • Operated 37 health facilities
  • Staff and equipped 19 mobile medical units
  • Ensured 129,000 individuals have access to water services

However, the need remains overwhelming. A recent survey conducted by Relief International in the North Darfur district of Melit produced alarming results that indicate a deteriorating malnutrition crisis across Sudan:

  • More than one in three children are acutely malnourished in Melit, indicating thousands of children under five are at a high risk of severe illness and death.
  • Two in five children were classified as underweight and the rate of child morbidity was 45.1%, meaning almost half of the children screened were ill in the two weeks before the survey. The most common illnesses were a fever, acute respiratory infections, and diarrhea.

Health and Nutrition Technical Advisor Edith Muturi says, “This is the worst rate of malnutrition I have ever seen. Without immediate action, we will see a generation of Sudanese children either facing premature death or suffering long-term health consequences such as physical stunting, cognitive impairments, weakened immune systems, and increased risk of chronic disease. It is heart-breaking because malnutrition is treatable, yet we simply do not have enough supplies.”

In the eight health facilities Relief International currently supports in the Melit district, a rapid scale-up of essential supplies and services is urgently needed. This includes Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to support community-based treatment of children with severe acute malnutrition, Targeted Supplementary Feeding Programs (TSFPs) to prevent the deterioration of moderate acute malnutrition, and increased personnel and medical supplies to effectively treat cases of severe acute malnutrition.

Funding for services that prevent malnutrition is also essential. This includes general food assistance, Blanket Supplementary Feeding Programs (BSFPs) which provide specialized food for vulnerable people, and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) counselling which supports mothers to feed their babies optimally.

With your partnership, we can continue to deliver life-saving healthcare and services to support the immense needs of individuals, families, and communities affected by the ongoing conflict.

Thank you for standing with us.
