*EXPOSING EQUAL ACCESS TO LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES*
*Gaba Hope for Kids - Gaba, Kampala*
In Gaba, access is not equal. We exposed it by asking children.
*What we found:*
- 5 learners share 1 book in government school
- 180 girls miss 3-5 days per month - no pads, no private latrine
- 12 street-connected children missed entire Term 1 - no uniform, no meals
- 0 computers for 520 learners at center, only 1 shared tablet
A boy from lakeside and a boy from main road - same class, different chance.
*What equal access means to us:*
Not giving every child the same thing. Giving every child what she needs to reach same classroom door.
- For Esther (15, P7): dignity kit + book + 30 mins tablet time
- For street child: meal + counseling + second-chance class
- For young mother (16): evening reading club so she can return
*How we are closing gap:*
1. *Listening:* Monthly community scorecard - parents, children vote what blocks learning
2. *Sharing:* Girls Reading Corner - 200 books open to all, not just top class
3. *Linking:* Pairing Gaba girls with Kampala mentors via WhatsApp supervised chats
4. *Proving:* Attendance tracking - girls moved from 65% to 98% when barriers removed
*Data we share openly:*
- 520 learners reached
- 340 received books
- 180 girls received dignity kits
- 12 former homeless children now in class daily
Equal access is not charity. It is justice. When a girl in Gaba reads, she competes with any girl in Kampala.
