A story of resilience and growth

By Kathakali Das Pandey | Project Leader

R is a remarkable 24-year-old young man with Autism Spectrum Disorder, who has spent the past five years in our Assisted Living Facility- Ananda. R faced unique challenges as he navigated life with autism. However, his story is one of resilience and growth.

R stays at Ananda which provides him with the structure and consistency he needed to thrive. R’s days are filled with structured routines and therapeutic activities tailored to his needs. In the beginning, R struggled to adapt to his new surroundings. His routines and familiar environment had been disrupted, causing anxiety and confusion. However, the caring staff at the residential facility patiently worked with him to create a structured routine that allowed him to feel more secure and comfortable.

Despite being nonverbal, R has found alternative ways to express himself. Through therapy sessions, he developed good routines, following schedules and communicating his needs through the object exchange communication system. R’s journey is not without challenges; every day presents new hurdles for him to overcome. Nevertheless, R requires extra attention for his tendency to have epileptic seizures. The residential facility has implemented safety measures to ensure his well-being, with trained staff members always ready to provide immediate care during these episodes. While these seizures can be frightening, R resilience works well every time.

One aspect of R’s journey that truly made a difference is his involvement in the vocational centre. This centre offered various training programs tailored to individuals with autism, enabling them to acquire vital skills and become more self-sufficient. At the vocational centre, R discovered his passion for being and working in a group. He loves to involve himself where his team mates are doing a group production, playing, gyming, sporting and participating in different activities in a group. There he learned how to handle materials and equipment safely and craft beautiful big door hangings and torans. Each piece he created became an expression of his creativity.

Outside of the residential setup, R’s way of life started gaining recognition in localities like climbing up the adjacent hills, visiting restaurants, attending functions at the village and participating in sports and annual day functions. R had always yearned to participate in the group activities that showcased his interest in fellow residents.

Determined to overcome his physical limitations, sports activity is the one which R always looks forward to. As the much-anticipated sports day approached, R’s excitement grew with a dash of stressors, as he saw changes made in his schedule, his environment and people spending more time in making structures. The team was moved by R’s enthusiasm and decided to create a sports activity suitable for him. They carefully selected an activity that would highlight his unique abilities while also allowing him to feel comfortable and valued.

Cheers erupted from all around as R crossed the finish line with a radiant smile on his face.

R, continued to explore his passion for sports, facing each new challenge with the same determination. His journey taught him and those around, that true strength lies not in physical abilities alone but in the resilience of the human spirit.

At the end, R’s story taught us all a valuable lesson about the power of perseverance, support, and the potential for growth in every individual. He reminded us that with the right environment and opportunities, anyone can shine brightly, regardless of their challenges.
