Rescue & Rehabilitation Report

By Aditya Makharia | Vice-President

1. Project Overview

The Rescue & Rehabilitation of Stray and Community Animals project is an initiative spearheaded by Karma Animal Charity, an international support arm directly funding and enabling the life-saving work of Karma Foundation, based in India.

Karma Foundation operates as a grassroots organization dedicated to rescuing, treating, rehabilitating, and rehoming stray and community animals suffering from life-threatening conditions. These include cases of severe illness, road traffic accidents, abuse, neglect, starvation, and cruelty.

2. Project Objectives

  • To rescue and provide emergency medical care to stray and injured animals in urban and semi-urban areas.
  • To rehabilitate rescued animals through long-term medical treatment, emotional recovery, and shelter.
  • To reduce animal suffering and control stray population growth through sterilization, vaccination, and outreach programs.
  • To build public awareness and compassion for animals through education and community involvement.

3. Key Achievements (Annual Impact)

During the most recent 12-month period, Karma Foundation achieved the following milestones:

  • Over 4,000 animals rescued and rehabilitated, including dogs, cats, goats, and pigs.
  • Advanced in-house veterinary care provided at our shelter facility, including surgeries, amputations, maggot wound care, fracture management, and long-term treatment.
  • Sterilization & Vaccination Drive: Over 1,200 stray animals sterilized and vaccinated against rabies.
  • Rehabilitation success stories of abuse survivors and senior animals given lifelong sanctuary.
  • Internship and volunteer training for aspiring vets and animal lovers, improving capacity for animal welfare in India.

4. Case Highlights

a) Laila – A cat whose skull was fractured after being hit with an iron rod for begging. She was rescued, treated for trauma, and is now recovering safely at Karma Foundation.

b) Bruno – A street dog attacked during mating, suffering multiple wounds and eye damage. After critical surgery and post-op care, Bruno is back on his feet and thriving.

These cases represent just two out of thousands who would have suffered in silence without intervention.

5. Use of Funds

All funds raised by Karma Animal Charity are directly routed to Karma Foundation’s operational requirements:

  • Veterinary expenses and medical supplies
  • Rescue operations and transport
  • Shelter facility maintenance and upgrades
  • Staff salaries and training
  • Food, bedding, and enrichment for rescued animals
  • Outreach and sterilization camps

A full financial breakdown can be provided upon request.

6. Challenges Faced

  • Increasing cases of animal cruelty and road accidents in urban areas
  • Limited space at the shelter due to volume of rescues
  • Rising cost of veterinary care and medical supplies
  • Emotional and physical fatigue on a small but dedicated rescue team

7. Future Plans

To enhance the impact of the project in the upcoming year, Karma Foundation aims to:

  • Expand the shelter space to accommodate more long-term cases
  • Launch a Mobile Treatment Unit for on-site minor treatments
  • Introduce Animal Birth Control drives in unserved urban pockets
  • Build partnerships for better community engagement and awareness

8. Gratitude and Acknowledgment

This project could not have been possible without the generous contributions from individual donors, foundations, and well-wishers from across the world. Karma Animal Charity and Karma Foundation extend heartfelt gratitude for your continued support, compassion, and belief in our mission.

Together, we are not just saving lives—we are creating a kinder world for those who cannot speak for themselves.
