When violence against Rohingya broke out in Myanmar, Senowara and her family fled for their lives through deep forest and hilly terrain, eating leaves from banana trees to stay alive. After 12 days, they made it to a refugee camp in Bangladesh where she now lives with her brother.
Senowara had no friends, was afraid to go outside her tent at the camp, and had little to eat. She felt hopeless and became very depressed. Then she heard about a World Concern sewing class for teenagers, and she joined. Every day from 8 a.m. to noon she learns how to sew. After that, the group meets for psychosocial support that helps the girls deal with the many challenges of refugee camp life. She has made many friends through this and is much happier.
Your gifts provided the class and group time that have given Senowara purpose and security. She is more confident and is reaching out to other teens in the camp. Additional trainings have taught her about hygiene and her living conditions have improved. And she is beginning to help other people by sharing her new knowledge.
Best of all, your gifts have enabled Senowara to start thinking beyond survival and plan for her future. She knows how to design and make clothing, and her dream is to earn an income with her own tailoring business. In addition, she longs for more opportunities to continue her education. She has a new sense of identity and pride because of the opportunities that belonging to the Sewing Group has given her.
Thank you for helping to save Senowara from depression and give her hope.
