In Aparis village, 5 out of 6 community boreholes are currently broken. This critical infrastructure failure forces 1,500 residents to walk 5 kilometers daily to collect water from contaminated ponds, which they must share with livestock. To resolve this crisis, the Project) is mobilizing local residents to repair, rehabilitate these hand pumps. This community-led initiative will restore immediate access to safe drinking water reduce waterborne illnesses, and return health and dignity to locals.
Severe Water Scarcity: 5 out of 6 aging community boreholes are broken down with worn hand pumps and missing parts. Contaminated Sources: 1,500 villagers-including children-walk up to 5 kilometers to fetch water from stagnant ponds shared directly with livestock. Health & Economic Crisis: Waterborne diseases like typhoid, skin infections, and severe diarrhea threaten daily life, while families waste scarce income on expensive charcoal to boil water or lose time as girls miss school.
Grassroots Community Execution: Work is led locally by Aparis CDP and community members rather than external contractors. Local Sourcing: Spare parts, cement, iron rods, and pump heads are purchased directly within Kumi. Targeted Hand Pump Rehabilitation: Replacing broken hand pump parts, pipes, and rods (averaging $200 per borehole to serve roughly 300 people) to bring reliable clean water back to the village.
Drastic Reduction in Travel Time: Hours-long daily walks for water are replaced with convenient, 5-minute local trips to functional boreholes. Improved Public Health: Access to safe drinking water sharply cuts down waterborne illnesses like diarrhea and typhoid among young children and families. Restored Schooling and Dignity: Girls no longer miss educational hours collecting water, households save money previously spent on boiling fuel, and the community regains basic health, safety, and
