Chores and repairs entrust to the children
Chores and repairs entrust to the children

The Filipino culture is very community oriented. In each house can live extended family. From a young age, children do household chores as well as take care of their younger siblings and cousins… But most of our children come from dysfunctional families so the streets become their training ground… How do we help transform these habits learned from the street into equipping them to become responsible individuals after they exit the center?

In SDC we entrust much of the daily duties to the children. Teams under the supervision of the house parents prepare 3 meals a day. They clean the entire center. The laundry and dishes are also hand washed. Building repairs, gardening and facility improvements are also endorsed by the children under the teaching of professionals. They are proud to learn new skills and take on these responsibilities!

However, nothing will replace the true love of a family! So we provide opportunities for relieving their broken hearts through art therapy, theater, spiritual enhancement, group sharing, and events such as dedicating a day for Mothers…

The staff and partners are also there to show compassion. When connections happen everyone involved gets filled up and overwhelmed by love.  Education and individual development activities are still a big part of the program, but isn’t spreading love the main purpose of what we are doing? Reading these lines is what makes your heart speak.

SDC kids have so little that they appreciate everything that is shared with them… They remain kids by sometimes misusing things, but overall it’s their right to have access to the basic. So we never get tired of repeating, redoing, repairing and we continue to be amazed by this everlasting chain of people driven by the same purpose
