We have been trying to focus on our apprenticeship and vocational training programmes which are nearing their end with graduations coming up on November. In the meantime, however, we are very aware of the concerning number of youths moving to our area from Turkana to the north of us. They are driven by a prolonged drought in the region which is making traditional pastoral activities virtually impossible. Pressure on resources in the area is sending more youths than ever in search of work opportunities out of their region.
These young people are ill equipped to deal with circumstances and competition for jobs in an urban area having spent their lives in rural desert villages.
Some are far too young to be living alone so far from family and others come with a young child that they find they can't afford to care for. This often tempts them to have their child put into care. We try and work with cases to ensure that youngsters can be reunited with family wherever possible. This is done through partner organisations who can help with childcare temporarily and by helping find training and employment opportunities for the parents of children in need to ensure the family has a sustainable future income. More and more we rely on our skills training programmes to enable these youngsters to have a brighter future.
