Most wonderful time of the year?

By Ian Wilson | Director

This is a time of the year we dread.  Schools closed last week until mid January to enable primary and high school exams to take place and to give time for marking exams before childrenove on to the next level.  Unfortunately, this means that those not doj g exams have almost three months off school and exam candidates slightly less.  Unless children are fortunate enough to be in homes where they are kept gainfully occupied and well cared for, this surfeit of spare time can lead to many problems.

Those living in slum areas on the outskirts of town inevitably end up hanging around on the streets out of boredom or hope of finding handouts or small jobs.  The number of children on the streets increases drastically and we have to work extra hard to ensure we reach those genuinely in urgent need while discouraging the others from getting involved in dangerous practices.

Sadly, even those who do not actively participate in street life are vulnerable to hunger or neglect at home or, in the case of girls, they are at serious risk of getting involved in relationships that can lead to early pregnancies which will affect the rest of their lives.

During this time, any help you can give to enable us to fund programs to occupy youths in their own communities would be most welcome.  Sports, community clean ups, life skills workshops etc would all help avoid children getting into trouble.  Thank you.
