Step Ahead towards building Resilience with Mangroves

By Team - Communications | Sabuj Sangha

Sowing Mangrove Seeds by Local Women of Sunderbans
Sowing Mangrove Seeds by Local Women of Sunderbans

In continuation to our earlier submitted report we are now walking ahead in building resilience among the community. As we feel that to protect communities across coastal Sunderbans plantation of various local Mangrove species is highly essential. Similarly as mentioned earlier if the local communities don’t have proper nurture and involvement to protect and extend the Plantation zones in wider geography there will have no impact on the overall ecology here. Also no protection mechanism can be build to prevent high rate soil erosion and breach of embankments with high tides and frequent cyclone with heavy rains.

We believe that only a resilient community will remain able to execute protection mechanism through creating resilience in a more strong way. In this regard we are now not only sensitizing communities but also making them involve actively. We are now sharing the status of our endeavours till the time.

  1. Identification of Land & Communities – Already been defined and completed
  2. Establishment of Model Garden for production of Mangrove Saplings – Completed and Production started
  3. Planting the saplings in River Beds,  Shore Areas and Country Sides Started
  4. Formation of Mangrove Protection Group (MPG) consisting of 5 members and a Mangrove Sensitive Community (MSC) consisting of 50 members- Completed

Altogether we have now-300 Community Members

  1. Capacity Building of the Mangrove Protection Group (MPG) consisting of 5 members and a Mangrove Sensitive Community (MSC) –Started
  2. Trade Selection for the Mangrove Protection Group Members – Goatery, Pond Based Integrated Farming and Poultry
  3. Develop a ‘Resource cum Knowledge Centre’ which will facilitate wider spread of Knowledge, Mentoring & Training Communities to capacitate them on Mangrove Plantations- Going On
  4. Planning Actions and continuous monitoring of activities

This is a very difficult and long run effort which needs consistent and deep interventions among the vulnerable communities across coastal Sunderbans. For wider area spread of Mangrove plantations we need resources as well.

We hope that you will surely extend your hands of support and make our efforts spread widely.
