From Being Carried to Moving with Independence

For Frank, a child living with spina bifida, mobility had been a daily challenge. His family had limited resources to afford a suitable wheelchair, leaving him highly dependent on his mother for movement.

During a community assessment, Joy for Children Uganda identified Frank’s mobility needs and followed up to find a practical solution. Through your support and our partnership with Father’s Heart Mobility Ministry, Frank received a wheelchair.

This simple intervention has opened up new possibilities for Frank. He can now move around with greater independence instead of relying on his mother. The wheelchair will also give him greater opportunities to participate in family activities, play and, as opportunities arise, attend school and engage more actively in his community.

For Frank’s mother, who is also his primary caregiver, the wheelchair reduces the physical burden of carrying him to and from school.

Frank’s story reminds us that sometimes restoring hope begins with meeting one very practical need.

Next Steps

Joy for Children Uganda will continue to follow up with Frank and his caregiver to ensure that the wheelchair is being used effectively and remains suitable for his needs.

We will also:

• Monitor children enrolled in physiotherapy to track their progress and provide additional support where needed.

• Continue working to secure more assistive devices for the children identified through our community assessments.

• Follow up with families to better understand any additional needs affecting the children’s mobility, education and participation in community life.
