How sports began to change Lera's life

By Denise Roza | Denise Roza

Here is Lera’s story about how sports began to change her life …

Lera is an active participant of Perspektiva’s after school sports program. She has an intellectual disability that affects her perception, cognitive and functional abilities, including the games she plays. At the beginning of the project, Lera could not perform many of the exercises and could not keep up with the other children in her class.

Now Lera eagerly joins the other children and uses the techniques she has learned from her teacher and other children in the class. She loves playing with the other children and especially loves playing prellball, and likes to hit the ball with her hands and elbows. She also likes to play torball - a game for athletes with visual impairments – and has significantly improved her spatial perception by playing it.

Lera has also begun to enjoy playing individual sports like tennis and table tennis. These games and playing sports have helped her to improve her communication skills, and make new friends.
