At just 14 years old, Sheila's world was turned upside down. Living in Mathare, Nairobi with her mother and stepfather, she had recently begun Form 1, full of hope for her future. However, her stepfather's predatory behavior soon shattered that hope.
During a school holiday, Sheila's stepfather began making sexual advances towards her. Frightened and confused, she turned to her mother for help, only to be accused of lying. Desperate, Sheila reached out to her aunt, hoping for intervention. Despite her aunt's support, Sheila's mother remained in denial.
The situation escalated tragically when Sheila's stepfather sexually assaulted her one night. Once again, Sheila bravely told her mother about the attack. Instead of protection, she was met with a demand for silence. Her mother, prioritizing the financial safety provided by her husband over her daughter's safety, sent Sheila to upcountry, effectively banishing her from home."My mother told me not to come back to Nairobi. When I went to upcountry, my grandmother said I couldn't stay there either. She was afraid she'd be arrested for keeping me from school. So when school reopened, I had no choice but to return to Nairobi."
When the school term resumed, Sheila returned to Nairobi, too afraid to go home. She sought refuge with a friend, but her reprieve was short-lived. Soon after, Sheila discovered she was pregnant—a devastating consequence of the assault. Alone and vulnerable, Sheila was forced to grow up far too quickly. With no support system and limited options, she began searching for work as a housemaid in Eastleigh, Nairobi, fighting for survival in a world that had failed to protect her. In Eastleigh, fate led Sheila to a community center where a case worker recognized her desperate situation and referred her to RefuSHE. This referral marked the beginning of Sheila's journey towards healing and safety.
At RefuSHE's Safe House, Sheila finally received the care and support she desperately needed. With access to medical attention and counseling, she began to process her trauma. Initially overwhelmed and considering terminating her pregnancy, the counseling sessions helped Sheila work through her conflicted feelings. Gradually, she found the strength to embrace her unborn child.
RefuSHE did not stop at providing immediate care. Our team took action to seek justice for Sheila, reporting her case to the police. As the investigation proceeds, there is hope that her stepfather will be held accountable for his actions.
Today, Sheila is navigating the challenges of new motherhood with her two-month-old baby. The Safe House has become more than just a shelter; it's a nurturing environment where Sheila can heal and grow. For the first time in her young life, she has found a supportive community she can trust and rely on.
At just 14 years old, Sheila has faced unimaginable hardships. Yet, with the support of RefuSHE, she is showing remarkable resilience. As she continues her healing journey, there is hope for a brighter future for both Sheila and her child.
