By Jamila | Beneficiary of Heshima Kenya's Safe House
My name is Jamila and I am 16 years old and from the Democratic Republic of Congo. I fled my country due to violent conflict. I was at school one day when there was an announcement that our village had been invaded. Everyone started running out and in the process, I was taken by the Mai Mai rebels and held captive in their camp for six months. It was a very dark and very bad experience and when I think about it I always break down. During this time, the rebels repeatedly sexually assaulted me and I eventually became pregnant. I was losing hope and started to become depressed when one day the rebels had gone to fight in another community and one of the rebels that stayed behind helped me escape. I walked for miles through forests not knowing where I was walking to. Eventually I met more people also trying to escape the war and the country and so we found a truck heading to Uganda and then Kenya so I eventually made my way here.
Once I arrived in Nairobi, I was desperate to find any safe place to stay. A good Samaritan who was Congolese and spoke my language allowed me to stay in his home for three weeks before taking me to Heshima Kenya for assistance. I was welcomed at Heshima Kenya and for the first time in a very long time I felt safe. I was taken to the Safe House where I met other girls with similar stories like mine and I started to feel less alone. I was not the only one who had gone through such trauma. I received a safe place to stay, medical attention, food, and also assistance during my pregnancy. I also received counselling to help me cope with my trauma and eventually start to feel like myself again. I gave birth to my baby girl shortly after and both her and I are healthy and doing well.
I was enrolled in the Girls’ Education Project (GEP) in Level One where I received English and Kiswahili lessons. I have greatly improved my language skills as well as overall academic and social skills as I progressed through the levels at the GEP. I am currently in vocational training classes and hope to eventually be able to graduate from Heshima Kenya and find employment to sustain myself and my baby girl. The community
I want to appreciate and thank Heshima Kenya for giving me hope when I didn’t have any left and the support and love that a family would give when I didn’t have one anymore. The community that Heshima Kenya has built has helped me rebuild myself also. Thank you to all of the supporters of Heshima Kenya that continue to allow Heshima Kenya to help girls like me.
