Samiya is a 24-year-old refugee woman from South Sudan. Raised by her extended family, her uncle attempted to force her into marrying an elderly man at the age of 13. Samiya refused and was able to run away and stay with an aunt in Ethiopia for some time. Samiya attended school in Ethiopia up until 2017 when she became pregnant. After giving birth to her son in Ethiopia, her uncle brought them both back to South Sudan and attempted to marry her off to anther elderly man against her will. After a month, Samiya fled from her uncle’s residence with her son and her friend to Nairobi, Kenya.
The two friends traveled by bus through the Moyale border to Nairobi. Samiya stayed with her friend Nadima and her two children from 2019 to 2020 when her friend relocated to Egypt. Samiya then moved in with her neighbor Christine who is also from South Sudan, and she took shelter with this woman, along with her husband and nine children. Samiya and her son briefly attended school, until her cousins from South Sudan tracked her down to return her to her home country. When Samiya refused, they beat her badly and Christine took her to stay at a friend’s house until she was fully recovered. Samiya’s uncle reached out again and threatened to come get her and her son from Nairobi. Samiya went to La Africana in Kibera for help where she was referred to the SHOFCO Safe House and stayed there for a month before being referred to RefuSHE’s Safe House in September 2022.
Samiya now resides in a safe and secure housing unit that has 24 hour security on site for ample protection. She receives food, clothing, cottage skills training, medical care, and mental health counseling. Samiya has particularly enjoyed the cottage skills training and now makes beautiful crocheted items. She had some previous knowledge of crocheting and hair dressing before arriving at the Safe House and has been able to perfect her skills through days of practice and training. She hopes in the future to join RefuSHE’s hair dressing and beauty vocational track, and that she can gain certification and have a business one day. At the Safe House, Samiya is able to find community with other refugee girls and young women who can support and relate to each other.
Despite the plentitude of hardships Samiya has experienced, this resilient young woman still chooses to be grateful for the life she has. She claims that, “everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learned that whatever state I am in, I embrace being content”.
