What This Report is About
First Time Computers receives no-longer-needed computers, including laptops, and fixes them up for low-income students in college or who are on their way to college. Over the past year, our laptop project has generated many more refurbished laptops than before [from 50 per year before 2010 to over 400 per year now] and we are able to provide them to many more college students and prospective college students.
Key Initiative
Over the past two months, we have been providing laptops to the valedictorians and salutatorians of 33 high schools and charter schools in the District of Columbia through a partner nonprofit known as Total Sunshine which is dedicated to honoring the achievements of these students and providing them with various forms of support as they head off to higher education. This is the third year we have provided laptops to Total Sunshine.
Importance of GlobalGiving to the Success of this Project
The support we receive for this project through GlobalGiving is critical. It has helped make it possible for us to hire an additional staff person whose primary responsibility is coordinating our laptop program. This support has also enabled us to make it a permanent part of our overall program. We expect our numbers to continue their upward trend, building the learning resources for students who would otherwise not be able to participate as fully as they now can in their learning experiences at college.
