What This Report is About
First Time Computers receives donations of computers that are no longer needed.  We have received 9,000 since we started in 2003.  We renew these computers, including many laptops, and provide them to low-income families with school age children and to nonprofits serving these families in the Washington DC metropolitan area.  From the beginning we have given refurbished laptops primarily to low-income students in college or who are on their way to college.

Recent Progress
Since 2010, we have begun to receive larger numbers of laptops, now up to about 500 per year as compared to less than 100 per year before 2010.  Now, unlike before 2010, most of the laptops we receive are high quality and come with wireless capability.  Because of the intense demand for these laptops, we recently brought on a new part time staff person to manage the laptop program.  This laptop coordinator ensures that all of the laptops we receive that can be refurbished actually get refurbished, that they are renewed to a high standard of quality and that they move through the refurbishing process without delay.   As a result, our laptop project is producing many more laptops than previously [from 50 per year before 2010 to over 400 per year now] and we are able to help many more college students and prospective college students than in the past.
