When ChoraChori-Nepal staff worker Reeti Sharma called at a village near Chapakharka last month she found a very demoralised and hopeless boy sitting at home. Sixteen year old Rajman had dropped out of school after last year's earthquake. His three hour walk to school - and life in general - had all become too difficult. The vivacious Reeti lifted his spirits and suggested to him that he might like to join the classes we're supporting for younger children at his local school. Rajman baulked at the prospect of studying alongside five year olds; that made him feel embarrassed. But Reeti is very persuasive and Rajman agreed to rejoin education after having been a dropout for the past year. Now he's fine and even enjoying the status of being the "dai" (Nepali word for "big brother") to the other pupils at Reeti's school.
Thanks to your support we've been able to forge ahead with rebuilding three schools, two of which are nearing completion. All should be ready for fun opening ceremonies after the monsoon clears in September. We've been able to continue providing school lunches and in the past fortnight recruited an additional teacher for Chapakharka. The lovely thing has been our increased capacity to not only deliver material support (vital as that has been) but also moral support to children such as Rajman.
