Dear GlobalGivers,
Thanks to your support, Yo quiero Yo puedo has been able to continue working in Cochoapa el Grande, one of the poorest areas of Mexico and where 98% of people live in extreme poverty. We are the only NGO working high in the mountains of Guerrero. Each year the poverty level increases in Cochoapa, making it critical to create strategies and programs that enable vulnerable communities to become empowered.
In Yo quiero Yo puedo, we have continued working enthusiastically and proactively hand in hand with the 124 communities of Cochoapa, even when we all had to adjust program activities due to the electoral freeze these last few months.
Today, the first part of the food security program has been successfully concluded, and we are excited to share that 712 facilitators have been trained, who have in turn worked with 586 families, offering alternatives of healthy eating, hygiene and health knowledge and have fostered the development of life skills and community empowerment. Together, we built: 30 dry bathrooms, 90 wood-conserving biomass cook stoves and 20 community gardens, thanks to your support. With new support, we will be able to follow up on these actions and lessons learned.
So far, we have had an amazing experience working in these communities and the gratitude from the communities is palpable. We have included a few testimonies from participating community members:
• "I have not been sick, like I used to be from all the smoke I used to breath; it does not hurt to breathe." Teresa, community member.
• "I feel happy because my family is not going to get sick anymore because we no longer cook on the floor." María, community member.
• "People who come to the community realize that there is a change (that there are now dry toilets) and that we are a cleaner town." Miguel, community member.
We appreciate your support, thank you and feel free to spread the word about this invaluable program you are making possible!
