Summary

Australian Red Cross can help communities in Australia prepare for disasters and emergencies before they happen, and to respond and support recovery, through emotional and social support. In Australia and worldwide, preparedness, response, and recovery support are more important than ever. We work alongside communities, strengthening resilience, providing essential disaster support, and advocating for those most in need.

Challenge

As global temperatures rise, so too does the threat of severe weather events. Australia is not immune: extreme heat, intense storms, ferocious bushfires, and devastating floods are impacting a growing number of communities every year. Australian Red Cross Emergency Services teams responded to 32 crisis events between July 2024 and June 2025, whilst NEMA has identified 5.9 million Australians live in areas where disaster resilience enhancement is needed.

Solution

At Australian Red Cross, our role is clear: before and after disaster, our teams are there to build community resilience, meet urgent need, and walk the road to recovery for as long as the journey takes. Each year we reach millions across Australia through preparedness campaigns. In response, we stand up evacuation centres and ensure no one faces crises alone, via outreach visits. We deliver psychological first aid to recovering communities via events, workshops, and training across Australia.

Long-Term Impact

Australian Red Cross staff, members, and volunteers are embedded in communities long after the news cycle has moved on, spending months and even years supporting residents living and working in disaster affected areas. Preventative measures - particularly those that can assist with mitigating psychosocial harm - aren't adequately funded or prioritised from a policy perspective. That's why Australian Red Cross remains embedded in disaster-affected communities for several years after disasters.
