Red wolves had another successful mating and breeding season in 2026, and four wolf packs now roam the refuges. Three of the four litters were from red wolf breeding pairs who had birthed pups last year. Red wolves mate for life, and siblings and grandparents often help raise pups. The red wolf wildlife crossings' federal and state contracts have been finalized, and the design phase has begun. The Center is leading a red wolf specialty license plate in North Carolina, and a bill to approve the license plates was introduced this spring in the state legislature. The Center is also leading efforts to study additional reintroduction sites for red wolves in the Southeast.
