This project will train 100 literacy champions in Uganda to recycle plastic waste into affordable literacy kits for schools, libraries, and underserved children. Champions will gain financial literacy and entrepreneurship skills, turning waste into learning materials while reducing pollution in eight urban slums. By integrating literacy advocacy with climate action, this project will improve learning for 15,000 children and empower youth with sustainable skills for the future.
In Kampala, Uganda, 40% of 2,000 tons of daily waste goes uncollected, piling up in slum communities like Katwe, Kisenyi, and Namuwongo. This leads to blocked drainage, contaminated water, and respiratory diseases from plastic burning. Meanwhile, 40% of children fail to complete primary school due to overcrowded classrooms and lack of resources.
