Recycle Waste for Literacy in Uganda
At Read to Learn Foundation, we believe every child deserves access to literacy and every community holds the power to make that possible. Through the Recycle Waste for Literacy project in Uganda, we’re transforming plastic waste and old tyres into low-cost, play-based learning materials for children in underserved areas.
This project empowers youth literacy champions, many of them former students from our programs, to lead workshops that turn trash into educational treasure. From alphabet letters crafted from tyres, to classroom visual aids and handmade bags from polythene waste, our champions are creating tools that make learning engaging, playful, and accessible.
But the impact doesn’t stop with materials.
These young leaders are also gaining entrepreneurial, environmental, and leadership skills showing their communities how education, sustainability, and creativity can come together to solve real-world problems. In just one holiday cycle, we reached over 1,000 children, cleaned up waste in the Gogonya 1 slum, and sparked a community-wide dialogue through a public debate on the value of learning through play.
With just $33 from GlobalGiving, our youth made more than materials they made a movement. A movement where children learn better, youth lead boldly, and waste becomes wisdom.
