It is truly remarkable how much has been accomplished in the months since two spring earthquakes and numerous aftershocks devastated the Dolakha District of east central Nepal. Every school sustained significant damage - many buildings were destroyed, while others were rendered unsafe for use. Kids were out of school for several weeks.
With the support of so many friends like you, and using our decades of experience in working to improve schools, ETC was able to respond quickly to get kids back to school as soon as reasonably possible.
All 30 schools with which ETC has been working since mid-2014 have received support in the form of building materials to construct temporary learning centers (TLCs) and classroom supplies and furnishings to replace those destroyed in the quakes. Your generosity has also helped us to provide similar support to 18 schools with which ETC had worked in years past, dating back to the 1990s.
Our next priority is to improve the TLCs so that they will be more weather-resistant. The TLCs are likely to be in use for some time, perhaps even a few years in some cases, because the process of rebuilding permanent school facilities will surely take quite a while. You can see from the photos that we have already begun to do this in some schools.
In short, while much good and necessary work has been completed, there is much more yet to be done. We are so grateful for your support of ETC's work with schools in rural Nepal.
From all of us at ETC, best wishes to you and yours for a happy 2016!
